Publishing

Guide to best practices for publishing and resources for publishing different types of research outputs.

Article processing costs

If you want to publish open access, many journals will ask the author to pay an APC, or article processing cost.

The Library does not have a general fund to cover article processing costs.

We currently only have agreements with the following journals:

  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
  • Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology, Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open (all through The Company of Biologists)
  • BMJ Case Reports

Association for Computing Machinery
If your article meets the following criteria, you can publish in the Association for Computing Machinery for free:

  • Original research to be published in the ACM Digital Library
    • This includes ACM's entire publication portfolio of journals, magazines, conference proceedings, newsletters, websites, and multimedia files, whose contents are listed at The ACM Full-Text Collection.
    • ACM books are excluded from the agreement
  • Have a corresponding author affiliated with CU Anschutz
    • To benefit from this agreement, it is very important that you use your CU Anschutz institutional email when submitting your work to ACM.
  • Accepted for publication between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2025

Company of Biologists journals

You can publish open access articles with no APCs in the journals Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology, Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open. You can find more information at the Company of Biologists' Guide for Authors.

BMJ Case Reports

If your article meets certain criteria, you can publish in BMJ Case Reports at a reduced cost. Please reach out to the Library if you are interested in publishing with BMJ Case Reports. Please note that there is an additional fee for publishing open access.

Other Journals

If you want to publish in a journal and do not have access to grant other funds to cover the APC, you should begin by asking the journal for a waiver or discount on the APC. You should also check with either your faculty mentor (if student) or department chair (if staff or faculty) to see if funds are available.
